A:  Yes, please refer to the bottom of the Extreme Glow Home page.

Q:  How does a light stick work and what are the chemicals inside the stick?

A:  All of our chemical glow products (glow sticks®, bracelets, necklaces, light sticks, etc.) contain a small thin-walled glass ampoule on the inside.  The ampoule contains a solution of hydrogen peroxide (a form of it is used as a topical anti-infective) dissolved in phthalic ester.  The chemical that surrounds the glass ampoule is a phenyl oxalate ester along with the appropriate dye.  When you activate the product by bending it - you hear a little snap.  The snap that you hear is actually the glass ampoule breaking.  The chemicals inside the ampoule are then released and mixed with the chemicals that once surrounded the ampoule.  Immediately, a chemical reaction occurs and the molecules are energized.  The molecules release their energy as visible light.  The process in which energy from a chemical reaction is released directly as light is called chemiluminescence.  The chemicals are non-toxic and non-flammable, however, they may permanently stain clothing, furniture, carpet etc.  Contact with the skin or eyes may cause some temporary discomfort.  Rinse thoroughly with water if the chemicals come in contact with your skin or eyes.

Q:  How do I activate the chemical glow sticks?

A:  If the product is individually foil wrapped, you need to remove the wrapper.  Bend the light stick (or any chemical glow product) until you hear a little snap.  There is a small ampoule inside the stick filled with a chemical and a different chemical surrounds the ampoule.  When the ampoule is broken - the two chemicals mix and the glow product will start to glow.  Finally, shake the product a little to mix the chemicals and create a nice even glow. Enjoy the safe cool light.

Q:  What color are the glow sticks before they are activated?

A:  Glow sticks turn a different color after activating them. This can be very confusing to customers that have not ordered glow sticks before. For example, you ordered blue glow sticks, but the glow sticks look white. To help our customers, below is a picture of all the glow sticks before activation:

Q:  How can I tell if a site uses a secure server and if a company is real?

A:  In the address (or URL) field, the "http" will change to "https" - the "s" stands for secure.  In addition, there will be either a closed padlock or a complete key on the top and bottom of your browser window.   The padlock or key will also be highlighted.  If the page is not secure, the key will be broken in half and the padlock will be open.  If you order online from Extreme Glow - you will notice these items when it comes time to input your credit card information.  Never order online from a site that is not secure and don't send your credit card info over the e-mail.  Companies that have toll free numbers and regular business hours are usually a better bet too.   BBBonLine certified is a good sign as are other certifications, such as Paypal Certified. These certifications can be independently verified.

Q:  What will happen if I put my chemical glow necklace in the freezer?

A:  You can "suspend" the chemical reaction that is taking place inside your chemical glow necklace by placing them in the freezer.  Let me explain.  If your glow necklace is rated for 8 hours, placing it in the freezer will not extend that rating, however, you can break up the 8 hours into smaller chunks.   If you used the necklace for 2 hours then put it in the freezer - you would have about 6 hours remaining.  When you want to reactivate the necklace- just take it out of the freezer and run it under warm water and it should start to glow.  This is not an exact science - feel free to experiment and remember it takes time for the necklace to freeze (yes, it will be glowing in the freezer until frozen) - the glow time in the freezer will count against the total glow time for the necklace.  We have tried this with the light sticks and they are too thick and don't freeze well, however, the chemical glow bracelets freeze up nicely.  Feel free to e-mail us with your success stories or ideas.

Q:  How does your glow powder technology compare to the old glow-in-the-dark powder?

A:  There are two basic glow-in-the-dark (GID) materials. The older style that has been around for many years is Zinc Sulfide with Copper as an activator.  I'm sure everyone reading this has seen products made with Zinc Sulfide, for example - those GID stars for kids rooms.  I know what your thinking - they didn't glow for very long back then and they don't glow for very long now.  Fortunately, we live in an age where technology is advancing rapidly - take computers for instance, improvements seem to be made almost daily.  The same is true for GID technology, recently a new GID powder has been developed.  The newer style is Strontium Aluminate with Europium as an activator.  The powder is a non-radioactive phosphorescent pigment with extreme afterglow.  The afterglow is about 10 times longer than conventional pigments and about 10 times brighter.  The excitation wavelength is very broad 200-450nm.  We use the newer powder for most of our projects.  If we have a customer request or new invention where we want the glow to die quickly, we can still use the old powder.  FYI - the new powder is 10X more expensive!  The above technology does not apply to our chemical products, only the products that are re-chargeable and contain glow powder.

Q:  How do I charge products that are made with glow powder?

A:  Our glow powder products are best activated by UltraViolet (UV) light.  Sunlight is the best source for charging the products, but practically any light source will do.  Blacklight is a good provider of UV light (Glow-in-the-dark Bowling with blacklights would be excellent). Fluorescent lights work better than incandescent bulbs. Heat is also another factor on the brightness of the glow, basically a warm glow powder product will glow much brighter than a cold one. The bottom line is that the brightness and duration of the glow is a function of the time spent charging the product and the distance of the product from the source.  The products can glow for up to 14 hours and are rechargeable!  Feel free to experiment with our products and let us know if you have discovered a  superior charging method.

1) What can our glow powder NOT be used for?

Extreme Glow’s strontium glow powder is a great tool for all kinds of industrial projects. We do not recommend that you use the powder outside of a viable medium (such as plastics, paint, candle wax, glass, etc).

While non-toxic, the powder is not recommended for any kind of skin contact (including gels and paint). Extreme Glow also does not recommend using this powder in water or a water-based paint. The glow powder is not water soluble, and will react like sand and settle at the bottom.

2) Can I put this powder on my skin?

No, this powder has not been approved for use in products that would be applied to the skin.

3) How does temperature affect the glow?

This warmer – the better. This product does not glow very well in low temperatures.

4) Is this product good for outdoor applications?

Typically no. It is good for small items, like fishing lures, that can be easily recharged, but there is more ambient light outside than most people realize.

5) Can this product be used in inks and paints?

Yes, we used our powder to make the ink on our tee shirts. This powder is heavy, and it does not go into solution well, so it will have a tendency to settle out. You will need to stir this product on a regular basis during use.

6) Can I use this powder with an injection mold?

Yes and no. The powder is very abrasive, and it will “polish” the insides of a mold when used under high pressure. The resulting product will be dingy, and the powder will affect the mold and screws on the system. If the powder is “treated” before use, it can be used with an injection mold with no problems.

7) What percentage of the powder should I use?

It depends upon what you are trying to achieve. A small amount will make a small glow. More powder will make more glow, but there is a limit. The rule of thumb on concentration is 10% for plastic parts and 20-50% for paints and inks. The thicker the item – the lower the concentration needed. Toilet seats, for example, are very thick, and you can get away with 3-4% concentration and still have a very good glow. Our vinyl sheeting has a 50% load of powder.

8) Do you have an MSDS on this product?

Yes, just ask us, and we will send you one.

9) What is the particle size for this powder?

This powder generally comes in 3 grades. We offer the medium grade. The particles are 20-50 micron. We feel this size offers the best compromise between size and glow. The larger the particle size – the better the glow. However, the larger particles are harder to use.

10) Compare the glow of the green, blue-green, and blue powders.

The green powder glows the brightest. The blue-green powder glows brightly also at about 95% of the intensity of the green. The blue powder glows about 80% of the intensity of the green.

11) How long does the powder glow?

The amount of glow depends upon your perception of the glow. The powder will glow for 14 hours, but how well you see the glow depends upon a number of factors. If there is ambient light, your eyes will have a tendency to adjust for that ambient light. If your eyes are not well adjusted to the dark, you may have trouble seeing the glow. If I get up in the middle of the night and walk into a dark room with the powder, I will see it very well. If I come from outside on a sunny day and walk into the same room, I will not see the glow until my eyes adjust to the darkness.

Q:  Can you explain how something can glow-in-the-dark?

A:  Products that glow in the dark do so because electrons are falling from a higher orbit to a lower orbit. When they fall to a lower orbit, they emit energy as visible light. Glow products fall into 2 different categories: chemical luminescent products (chemical necklaces and light sticks) and photo luminescent products.

The first category is chemical luminescent products. These products are like the chemical necklaces and light sticks that you can purchase from Extreme Glow. A chemical reaction is taking place. (Two chemicals react with each other to become one chemical.) When the reaction occurs, the electrons in the new product get excited, and they emit light when the electrons fall back into their normal orbits.

The second category is photo luminescent products. These products have chemicals in them with electrons that get excited by light waves. No chemical reaction actually occurs. When removed from the light source, the electrons will fall back into their normal place and emit light in the process. That is the glow that you see. There are two basic chemicals for photo luminescence. One is Zinc Sulfide, and the other is Strontium Aluminate. The Zinc Sulfide product is what you get in most glow products. (stars, moons, etc.) It will glow for 10-20 minutes after the light source is removed. Strontium Aluminate is new. It will glow for up to 40 hours depending upon the type of charge it receives, the temperature of the substance, etc. We use the strontium aluminate in most of our re-chargeable products, and we claim up to 14 hours of glow based on typical average temperatures and relatively brief charges.

Q:  Are your products good for fundraisers?

A:  Our products are perfect for fundraisers. They are fun for the sellers and the buyers alike, and they generate large amounts of money quickly for your school or other organization too.  Unlike most fund raisers - our products will not cause cavities.
